Coyu is one of the most referenced and respected personalities on the Techno scene. Fifteen years of an unstoppable DJ career behind the mixer speaks for him. No less appreciated since he founded his cat empire in 2008, Suara, he’s been known to be the inspiration for many because of what he’s achieved, directing a brand that shows no signs of slowing down. What started off as a record label (until this day it’s still one of the most important labels for Techno and underground club sounds, as you will be able to see reflected on main charts) is now a symbol for cat and dance music lovers. Coyu directs with great precision a brand that because of such a demand is also a brand of clothes (Suara Store, with a physical store in Barcelona) and a non-lucrative organization that loves and helps street cats (Suara Foundation).
He has already played at important events such as Ultra Miami, Seoul, Singapore, Beijing, Stay True Spain / Boiler Room, DGTL, Space Closing and several times at Sónar.
Coyu has remixed artists such as MOBY, Green Velvet, Charlotte de Witte, The Japanese Popstars, Stephan Bodzin, Joseph Capriati, DJ Hell to name a few.
Suara Opening 2017
A career-defining moment for the multi-faceted Spanish producer, DJ and label boss Coyu became reality this fall 2019. His eagerly awaited debut long-player it is now a fact. It’s been over seven years of intense introspection and studio work to give birth his first ever album. Don’t expect an LP that serves a club function; “You Don’t Know” branches far beyond a singular sound and shows off just how versatile he can be. In words of Coyu “The album is named ‘You Don’t Know’ because many people have a preconceived idea of who I am. Until now, maybe I wasn’t smart enough to show them who I really am, my roots, what I love and what I can offer to the music. I’m not just a DJ or a producer who can play or make grooves – I love many different genres and many different kinds of music. With this album I want to change that preconception. I want to show a side of me that people have never seen”.
The album kicks off with a dramatic spoken word from legendary vocalist Lazarusman before exploring low slung and sleazy grooves on ‘The Three Chimney’, floaty light melodic and dreamy house on ‘Out of The Pain’ and more club focussed but just as dreamy fair on ‘We All Try’ with Mike Leary.
Proving he can do everything from poolside gems to peak time Techno, ‘Fear Is Gunna Be A Player In Your Life’ is one to get you in a trance with its sonar like synths and rolling deep space drums. Thomas Gandey aka Cagedbaby then steps up to guest on ‘1+1’ which is a hands in the air piano anthem to pump the party, and ‘Wanna Do Right, Wanna Do Wrong’ is a techno cut with brilliantly energetic drum programming and a big, perfectly placed vocal sample.
Switching up the vibe is ‘I May Be Dead, But One Day The World Will Be Beautiful Again’ with none other than dance legend MOBY. It is a heavenly track with break beats, angelic melodies and a celestial feel that leaves you refreshed. The second half touches on raved-up drum & bass, gurgling minimal Techno and harder Techno with mind melting acid synths. The Horrorist contributes to the banging ‘My First Pill’, while the techno journey continues with ‘Unite’ featuring Gabriella Vergilov before the album finishes on the fluttering ambient track ‘Insania’, with mad church bells and manic percussion all bringing things to a close in style.
This is a broad, adventurous album that covers plenty of music ground and takes you on a true electronic trip from one of dance music’s most accomplished names.
In 2020, COYU decided to create two new artistic pseudonyms to express his sound in other ways: Esprit Divers and Hassler
ESPRIT DIVERS “Eclecticism and diversity is something that has followed me since I started to get interest on music. This is why I have decided to split my projects and create Esprit Divers, who will be in continuous motion seeking for different sounds, based in the idea of music of contrast: light and dark, sorrow and hope, mind and soul.”
The first result of this endeavour is “Turbulentos”. A fortified low slung bass drum is the fuel to propel this techno train forward released on Kompakt / Speicher X series. Actually “Turbulentos” resonates the earliest days of Kompakt’s sweat drenched clubland Speicher glory, but fits the set demands for the biggest of today’s festival stage DJs.
HASSLER is willing to openly demonstrate his particular passion for house and fireproof disco sounds.
“I always have liked house and disco, but since I’m very focused on (hard) techno these days I decided to start a new project where being able to release whatever I want without the pressure of the (techno) scene. But the idea behind Hassler is not just release house music but not follow the rules and release whatever I think it’s fun, groovy and make me dance. Mostly high tempo (132-136) house and disco but always mixed with other genres.
Trick is the perfect place for releasing my first Hassler release and developing my sound. Patrick Topping’s label is one of the few house labels that cross borders and try to be authentic. They don’t revisit the 80s and the 90s as many other labels do at this right moment, but create something fresh and unique.”
Hassler ‘Icke” EP is was released on September 11th, 2020 on the British Trick label.
